Important Leona Quarry Meeting
Many community members have been asking about what is going on with the Leona Quarry project and inquiring about the scheduled opening of the comment period on the Draft Subsequent Leona Quarry EIR, before the planning commission on November 19th.
Those of us responsible for filing the court case and our attorney, Leila Monscharsh, have been engaged in intensive confidential settlement discussions regarding the Leona Quarry development with the DeSilva Group, and the City. Working together, we have made considerable progress toward making this a safer and better project.
The negotiations have been complicated, delicate, and time-consuming. We have agreed to work confidentially until we have crafted a final settlement. We have agreed not to discuss the terms until a final agreement among the participating parties is reached.
Because an agreement can not be reached within the next week, the four of us will not be able to comment on the Draft Subsequent EIR at the November 19th Planning Commission meeting. The original comment period expires December 8th. The DeSilva Group and the City have agreed to a two-week extension of the comment period until December 22nd.
A community meeting to inform you about the Leona Quarry and possible agreement has been set for December 4th at the Hillview Baptist Church, 7309 Greenly Dr., 7:00pm.
You have a right to make public comments, both verbal and written regarding the EIR. However, it may be helpful to our negotiations if you withhold your comments to the Planning Commission until after the community meeting. We look forward discussing these issues with you on the 4th of December.

Okay!
Maureen Dorsey's house was put on the market for sale last week. An open house is scheduled for November 23, the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
The timing tied with the notice for a "private" settlement is incredibly fishy. Does Maureen know something that the rest of us don't know. If these were securities instead of real property, this would be considered insider information.
I'm not hopeful that the community got a fair shake and that "some" people will get a better settlement than others.
Posted by: Michelle Lewis on November 22, 2003 01:10 PMMy house is on the market because I have moved 2 blocks away to live with my partner of 8 years, Sparky Carranza. After a medical condition this summer that involved surgery, we realized that keeping 2 residences was too much. We considered leaving Oakland with all of its plusses and minusses, but decided to commit ourselves to this asylum! We know that we could not find a better neighborhood than the one that we have been actively working for these past many years.
I cannot comment upon the settlement agreement any further than what is pubished above. At the meeting we will be able to give more information to the community. This has been a lawsuit regarding CEQA and another cause of action, it is not a personal suit nor is there any personal settlement involved. It is quite common for settlements to only involve the litigants, in private, until that settlement is confirmed or declined.
We hope to see all interested neighbors and friends at the December 4th meeting.
Maureen Dorsey
Ain't no disgrace to be poor - but might as well be.
