From The Daily Enron, a terrific web site
"Even though Bush took back roads to a fund-raiser in Portland, environmental groups staked out the route and held signs protesting his "Healthy Forest Initiative" as nothing more than an excuse to cater to the logging industry. Check out the New York Times article about Bush's new environmental laws that exempts older plants from installing new anti-pollution measures.
"President Bush lost Oregon by a mere 7,000 votes in 2000, and he has not hidden his intentions to make it a target in his re-election campaign. The fact that the state's unemployment rate is a dizzying 7.8 percent is an obvious impediment for the president.
"Recent polls have confirmed that the American public does not support the Bush economic plan. This, of course, is not groundbreaking news. But the raw figures are staggering nonetheless.
"A majority (52 percent) of Americans disapprove of Bushs handling of the economy Only 40 percent approve 57 percent feel that Bush should make the economy his primary focus, up from 38 percent who said the same thing back in January
"These polls indicate that the public cares about the economy and the budget. But Arnold Schwarzenegger must have commissioned some polls of his own, because yesterday he declared that "The public doesn't care about figures."
"Sadly, Schwarzenegger's infant campaign has produced so few real policy solutions to California's problems that this qualifies as a major
declaration for him (see also, Bush, George W. AND Campaign 2000). It follows closely on the heels of his earlier statement that, when curing budget woes, "The first thing that you have to do is not worry about should we cut the programs or raise the taxes and all those things."
"The multimillionaire actor-turned-politician has repeatedly labeled himself the people's candidate. But the people are demanding answers, and Schwarzenegger hasn't provided them. He hasn't even been firing blank movie bullets - his holster's been completely empty."
