HARRY EDWARDS IS GONE!
James Ryugo Appointed Interim Parks & Recreation Director
From the Office of the City Manager:
Interim City Manager Deborah Edgerly has announced the appointment of James Ryugo as the City of Oakland's Interim Parks & Recreation Director, effective August 1, 2003. Ryugo will fill the post upon the retirement of Dr. Harry Edwards.
Ryugo has served with Oakland Parks & Recreation Department since 1980, most recently as Manager of Capital Improvements under Edwards. As Interim Director, he will oversee facilities and activities at the City's 89 parks and 22 recreation and community centers.
"Jim is a true professional and works well with community groups throughout the City. He knows the department very well and I am pleased that he will take the reins, especially during the height of the season of summer activities," said Edgerly.
"This is a great opportunity and I look forward to working with the public on the various challenges facing Parks & Recreation,'' said Ryugo.
Ryugo holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry degree from UC Berkeley.

Question: how many broken hearts are left at Parks and Rec at this development?
Posted by: The KIJE Project on August 1, 2003 10:48 PMKije is asking a double-edged question because Kije has been following OaklandNews and our tantalizing tidbits.
If Kije means, "Is there anyone left at Parks and Rec who misses Harry as the boss?" we think we can say,
"Yes. Noel Gallo will miss being protected by Harry through Ignacio and Jerry, because this was prob'ly the only paying job Gallo could have found any where on this earth." And by "paying" we mean over $100,000 to the Larry Reid of the erstwhile school board.
If Kije is oh-so-subtlely referring to dalliances ...we hear that one female was transferred back to the city department from which she came, and another is staying in place.
Friends and neighbors, why aren't you outraged at this? If this hasn't made you mad-dog mad enough then read Jesse Douglas Allen-Taylor's* essay. Go for broke and read Jerry's entire speech, but only if you're in a restraint hold.
* Or, as we fondly refer to Jesse, "The Man with Four First Names."
Hello,
My name is Erica and I was wondering if you had any contact information for Dr. Edwards (email, phone number, etc.)? I am trying to contact him regarding research and his area of expertise in working with athletes. I can be reached at 401-874-0087 or email me at ezeee2000@aol.com
Thank you,
Erica Conners
